Chapter 45

Solace

There was a shift in our house yesterday. My mother was putting up a front, but I could sense something was off. By the time I left this morning, she hadn’t said a word, but I felt that there was something she was hiding from me. I just don’t know what.

I’m too overwhelmed with my own issues to worry about it too much, hopefully, the truth will come out soon. We still hadn’t found any information about the portals, even after our extensive time in the library.

Cove seemed to fare well when I told him I would be going with Quenen after class today. He didn’t like it, as expected, but he didn’t fight me either. After all, I was being honest with him.

Today flew by and before I knew it, Quenen and I were walking into a neighborhood of tall buildings.

Thin structures staked next to one another, touching on either side, leaving no space for side yards or windows. Each one is different but they are all built with the same concept. I understand the term of dirty magic now, the city seems to hum like a machine that needs to be oiled. Even though the magic keeps the city clean it seems to have a residual film.

The buildings change as we walk, and it opens up into a quaint neighborhood. More trees line the street and I suddenly forget about the bustling of the streets behind us.

Quenen stops in front of a large brick home with a curvy black railing leading up a tall set of stairs. The front door is exquisite, it looked as if it was hand carved giving the home a unique character and charm.

“So this is it.” He motioned up the stairs. I noticed that he seems to be uneasy today. Like bringing me here was opening up secrets about himself.

He stops, causing me to hesitate on the first step and look back at him.

“My roommates are not as well-mannered as your friends. Please do not give them any mind if they make crude remarks. It’s best to ignore them.” Crude remarks? They can’t be any worse than he is.

“Afraid that they’re going to tell me all your secrets, Quenen?” He rolls his eyes as he advances past me to open the door.

I had expected a college frat house with beer cans and drugs scattered around. I tried not to show my surprise as I walked into the entryway. It was tall and the ceiling was rounded. Hanging from the middle was a grand chandelier, sparkling in the afternoon sun. A small table sat underneath it and behind, a large staircase wrapped around the circular wall. Not a speck of dust or a thing out of place.

To my left, an arched doorway opened up to a well-lit living room. A quaint green velvet couch sat on wooden legs and across from it two plush chairs and a fireplace.

“This is nice,” I comment, he offers me a genuine smile as he sets his bag on the table in the middle of the entryway.
